Americans barely know there are three branches of government, but to the extent they do know, they have little faith in any of them. Congress has been in the toilet for years. In the last 50 years, it has been over 50% only during Bill Clinton's second term and briefly after 9/11. It is now at 14%. Here is the historical graph since 1976:
When asked about their own representative, 33% had a favorable opinion. That is better than Congress as a whole, but still not great.
Approval of the president goes up and down, depending who is president. Donald Trump is now at 34%. He can brag that he is twice as popular as Congress if he wants to. But beating Congress is a low bar.
What is new is the Supreme Court's approval. It used to always be above 50% and sometimes even above 60%. In a Gallup poll it is now at 33%, even worse than Trump, but at least better than Congress. The Supreme Court's slide is due to Republicans. Only 58% approve now, down from 79% last year. It looks like they want all the decisions to go their way. Getting 90% just doesn't cut it.
Basically, Americans have almost no trust in any branch of government. Very little gets done and everything takes forever. America has become ungovernable. As JVL at The Bulwark says at the end of all his podcasts: Good luck, America. (V)
