News from the Votemaster

With the Iowa caucuses only a week away (Jan. 3), most of the presidential candidates are camped out there. The polls show a very close race between Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and John Edwards on the Democratic side and Mike Huckabee leading Mitt Romney on the Republican side. However, Iowa caucus polls must be take with a grain of salt. Turnout is always very light and is heavily weighted towards white, elderly, rural women, hardly a cross section of America. If there is a snowstorm, which is common in January, only the most dedicated voters will show up and the results will have no predictive value for the future, except that the media will carry on like crazy suggesting that they have deep meaning, which may influence New Hampshire voters.

Another complicating factor on the Democratic side is the viability rule. If a candidate gets less than 15% of the vote in the initial showing of hands, he or she is eliminated and the candidate's supporters get to make a second choice. Some polls have shown that the second choice of the Kucinich, Dodd, Biden, and Gavel supporters favor Edwards by a large margin. Finally, no actual delegates to the DNC are chosen on Jan. 3, just delegates to the county-level caucuses, which chooses delegates to the district caucuses, which chooses delgates to the state caucus, where the real delegates are chosen. So winning Iowa is all about publicity, nothing else.

Iowa and New Hampshire, which has a primary (you come in, vote, and go home) on Jan. 8, interact in some strange ways. Of course winning Iowa gives a candidate a big burst of free PR and a fourth place finish convinces the media that you are dead meat, but there is more this year. While the Iowa Democrats have some peculiar rules, so does New Hampshire. In particular, independents, who make up 40% of the electorate, can ask for either a Democratic or a Republican primary ballot. Hillary Clinton is the favorite of the regular Democrats in New Hampshire and Mitt Romney is the favorite of the regular Republicans. Two candidates are fighting vigorously for the independents: Barack Obama and John McCain. If Romney wins Iowa, some NH independents may expect him to the be nominee, ask for a Democratic ballot, and vote for Obama. If, however, Mike Huckabee wins Iowa, this event upsets the GOP race and many of the independents may ask for a Republican ballot to vote for McCain, thereby hurting Obama and helping Clinton. Thus a Huckabee win in Iowa is good for Clinton. Go figure.

A Huckabee win in Iowa and a low turnout for McCain in New Hampshire also helps Clinton in another way. McCain is probably the Republicans' strongest opponent against her in the general election. His maverick tendencies on taxes, immigration, and campaign finance make him impopular among rank and file Republicans, but in November they have no where else to go and will hold their noses and vote for him (just as many progressive Democrats will hold their noses and vote for Clinton if she is the nominee). However, McCain's maverick tendencies also make him popular among independents, who matter a lot in November. All the other Republican candidates have serious flaws that seriously bother many Republicans: Giuliani's personal life and views on abortion and gays, Romney's flip-flopping on the issues, Thompson's laziness, and Huckabee's lack of experience and money and his tendency to accept gifts from all comers. None of the Democratic candidates raise the hackles much among Democrats. Thus a McCain candidacy will probably unite the Republican party whereas the other Republican candidates may leave it splintered.
