News from the Votemaster

As former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson put it: "In politics, a week is a long time." Yesterday's assassination of Benazir Bhutto in nuclear-armed Pakistan may well demonstrate this. The murder of Pakistan's opposition leader will certainly increase turmoil there, especially since many Pakistanis believe President Musharraf was either behind it or didn't do enough to prevent it. This event will surely affect U.S. politics. First let's look at a new poll completed the day before Bhutto was killed, then speculate how all that has changed.

The LA Times has just released new polls of Iowa and New Hampshire. The Democratic race in Iowa is a three-way statistical tie between Hillary Clinton (29%), Barack Obama (26%), and John Edwards (25%). In the Republican contest there, Mike Huckabee has zoomed to a big lead over Mitt Romney, 37% to 23%. In New Hampshire, it is a two-way tie between Clinton (30%) and Obama (32%) on the Democratic side. On the Republican side, Romney (34%) is substantially ahead of John McCain (21%).

How do the events in Pakistan affect the presidential race? Of course no one knows (yet), but it is likely that they will bring foreign policy issues to the fore. All the candidates instantly responded to the assassination with their own spin. Translated into English, here is what they said:

Clinton: My daughter played with her kids when I was over there in 1995
Obama: Hillary's vote on Iraq was the root cause of the assassination
Edwards: I told Musharraf to become more democratic
Giuliani: Only I can fight these nasty terrorists
McCain: The world is dangerous; I know, I have been there
Romney: We must fight violent jihadism
Thompson: There is no way we will have a woman president next year
Huckabee: I think Musharraf should lift martial law [it was lifted 2 weeks ago]

In our view, this horrible turn of events will destabilize Pakistan and may make some Democrats think: Is a nice guy three years removed from the Illinois state Senate ready to deal with this mess? And it may make some Republicans think: Mike loves Jesus more than any of the other guys, but McCain actually knows a thing or two about foreign policy. With the Iowa voting only a week away, it seems likely that the candidates with extensive foreign policy experience are bound to benefit. Except for the candidate with the most experience of all: Joe Biden, who isn't even on the radar any more.

In a new national poll conducted by Knowledge Networks and released by the AP, Hillary Clinton has a commanding lead over Barack Obama, 47% to 25%. If Obama and Edwards can't stop her in Iowa, it will be nearly impossible to stop her later on. On the GOP side, Mike Huckabee has now crept into the lead over Rudy Giuliani, 22% to 21%. Worrisome for Huckabee is that 40% of the Republicans don't know enough about him to know whether they have a good impression or a bad impression of him. This kind of support is as soft as butter sitting outdoors in Nevada in July.

The cumulative polling data are below. They are also available in .csv format.
